Director of Commercialization
Sweetwater Energy, Inc. (“Sweetwater”) is seeking a qualified individual to hold the position of “Director of Commercialization” at its Rochester, New York facility. This position requires the qualified candidate to direct the planning, execution and finalization of the permitting, design and procurement activities associated with a commercial cellulosic biorefinery.
Specifically, the Director of Commercialization will require the qualified candidate to: (1) develop and commission proprietary Sweetwater raw material classification and extrusion technology (collectively termed as Sunburst®), which includes (i) development of valve systems that control material flows, (ii) development of variable configurations (i.e., extrusion screw configurations, end-valve configurations to facilitate processing of raw materials, etc.) (iii) leading plant and equipment scale-ups from pilot scale to full-production scale and (iv) development of control loop tuning and leading discussions on distributed control systems (DCS) and programmable logic controllers (PLC); (2) lead project management efforts to ensure Sweetwater’s plants are built on-time and within budget; (3) lead engineering efforts with Sunburst® licensees to build, install and commission Sunburst systems globally, which includes liaising with global engineering firms, licensees and equipment vendors to ensure successful commercialization of Sunburst® and attendant systems; (4) provide technical oversight of all aspects of deployment of Sweetwater’s technology suite, including Sunburst®, hydrolysis, solid/liquid separation and fermentation; (5) lead the installation and commissioning teams to ensure successful commissioning of Sweetwater’s technology in factories as they are built; (6) facilitate management of Sweetwater’s demo facility to ensure that project deliverables and customer requirements are met; (7) develop procurement rules for equipment vendors within Sweetwater; (8) lead technical and commercial vendor negotiations with all vendors supplying equipment to Sweetwater and its Licensees; (9) lead technical and commercial vendor negotiations for Sweetwater with enzyme suppliers; and (10) lead technical and commercial vendor negotiations for Sweetwater with yeast suppliers.
Qualified candidates must possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Processing Engineering or a related field. Qualified candidates must also possess five years (60 months) of experience in an engineering management role and Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. The referenced experience must include five years (60 months) of each of the following: dealing with technical engineering and commercial issues; managing teams with diverse backgrounds; dealing with extrusion technology (e.g., screw methodologies, dies, molds, etc.); technical leadership and/or project management role; negotiating complex contracts with vendors; designing, planning, building and/or managing manufacturing plants; working in, or developing, quality management systems and working towards applicable certifications (e.g., ISO); training plant/facility staff on operations of equipment and development of training and operating manuals. Qualified candidates must also have demonstrated practical abilities to lead capital projects (greenfield or brownfield) of $25 million or more and to lead the hand-off from commercialization to operations. Finally, there is the potential for 25% international and domestic travel based on project needs.
