Nanofibrillated Cellulose (NFC)
Faster and cheaper than anything else on the market
Sweetwater’s Nanofibrillated Cellulose starts life as the low-cost, loosely agglomerated MCC that Sunburst™ makes possible, allowing for the production of a low-cost Nanofibrillated Cellulose – But there are even more cost and energy savings. Sweetwater has found a method to create very high-quality NFC from our MCC in minutes, using a low amount of energy.
In addition to a manufacturing price well below the current market’s, Sunburst™ has the capability to make NFC in high volumes, opening up new market opportunities.

Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC)
Extremely low-cost MCC from nearly any biomass
Microcrystalline Cellulose, a polymer composed of glucose, has a very broad array of applications from packaging, cosmetics, binders, absorbents, concrete strengthening, to name only a few. Sunburst™ reimagines the conventional production pathway by allowing MCC to be produced for less cost than conventional methods while retaining the value of the sugar and lignin coproducts.

Purest Native Lignin
Non-sulfonated, with minimal or no carbohydrates. Available in various formats.
Since Sunburst™ deconstructs biomass so effectively, the resulting lignin is extremely low in contaminants and surprisingly easy to isolate from the biomass’ carbohydrates. It retains its reactivity, making it suitable for a variety of valorization pathways.

Clean C5-Rich Sugars
Clean C5-rich sugar that give comparable process yields to refined xylose
Sunburst™ separates and monomerizes up to 97% of the biomass’ hemicellulose and 20% of the cellulose in just 20 seconds. Following Sunburst pretreatment, a simple separation step can create an aqueous solution of C5-rich sugar that has been proven comparable to conventional xylose streams for downstream product creation.

Clean C6-Rich Sugars
Clean, high-performing C6-rich sugar
Since Sunburst™ is so effective at monomerizing C5 sugars, those monomers can be removed and the remaining lignin and cellulose mixture can be hydrolyzed to create extremely clean sugar. The reduced volume of hydrolyzed material requires up to 30% lower capital costs for tankage, and significantly reduced enzyme loading – all of which leads to high-performing C6 sugars that cost far less than any other cellulosic methodology.

Mixed C5/C6 Sugars
Clean, high-performing mixed C5/C6 sugar
After biomass is pretreated with Sunburst™, it has the appearance and consistency of chocolate mousse. This material can be enzymatically hydrolyzed, resulting in more than 95% of the C5 sugar and 92% of the C6 sugar being monomerized and ready to be transformed into high-value products after separation from the lignin.
