Sweetwater Energy, Inc., a renewable bioproducts producer in Rochester, New York, is pleased to announce it has appointed Vipin Kuckreja to be General Manager of its Activated Carbon Division.

Kuckreja will lead the team that develops applications and secures contracts for the activated carbon products from Sweetwater’s first commercial plant in Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota.

The plant will convert hardwoods to both sugars and ultra-clean lignin. It will then further process the lignin to produce high capacity high-end powdered activated carbon to be used in a wide array of applications, including air and water purification, low molecular weight organics removal, and energy storage. The plant will initially produce 6,000 metric tonnes of activated carbon a year.

Kuckreja’s outstanding experience makes him perfectly suited for this key position. With an M.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Missouri, he has a deep understanding of business development within the activated carbon industry around the world, and particularly in Asia, Latin America, and Canada. During a successful career with Calgon Carbon Corporation he led business in China and Asia, where his strategies for growth delivered spectacular results. He has also consulted for Cabot Corporation’s Purification Solutions Group and Oxbow Activated Carbon, LLC.

“I am very excited to join the extremely talented team at Sweetwater Energy,” says Kuckreja. “Their unique process produces high quality activated carbons for a broad range of applications due to the unique pore structure of their raw material. I look forward to working as part of the team to further develop carbon products to meet the needs of a fast-growing market.”

“Vipin has a legendary reputation in the activated carbon markets globally, says Sweetwater’s Chairman and CEO, Arunas Chesonis. “His extraordinary expertise and knowledge of both products and applications will be invaluable for Sweetwater as we enter the highly competitive world of activated carbon.”
